Six Signs Your Rain Gutters Need to be Replaced

Your rain gutters are constantly exposed to the elements and have to withstand hundreds of pounds of water at a time in heavy rainstorms. Seamless aluminum or steel rain gutter systems should last for years if properly maintained, but it’s inevitable that your gutter will eventually need to be replaced. So, how do you know when it’s time? Here are six signs that your rain gutters have reached the end of their life.

Leaky gutters Need to be Replaced

1) Cracking

Cracked gutters won’t funnel water to the downspout as effectively. So, it’s important to inspect your system for cracks. Large cracks are usually visible to the eye, but smaller cracks might not be noticeable until they start to leak water in a storm. You may be able to fix some small cracks with sealant, but multiple cracks are a serious indication that your system needs to be replaced.

2) Sagging

Water is heavy, and it will wear on your gutter system over time. Sagging gutters will cause water to pool and potentially spill over, preventing proper drainage. Consider replacing your gutter system when this occurs.

3) Pooling Water Near Foundation

When functioning properly, your gutter system will direct water away from your home. If you notice pools of water near your foundation or water in your basement, it’s a sign that your gutter is not doing its job and may need to be replaced.

4) Peeling Paint

If your gutters are peeling away from your roof, water may seep behind the rear edge of the gutter causing the facia board to rot. It can also leak onto your siding causing the paint on your home to peel. Once you notice this occurring, it likely means your gutters have been separating from your home for a while, and you should probably replace them.

5) Separating at Seams

Gutters are weakest at the seams, where they can eventually leak and separate. Separating gutters can sometimes be repaired, but it may be more effective to replace them with a seamless gutter system built from a single piece of metal.

6) Broken Fasteners

The fasteners that hold your gutter to the roof will likely need to be repaired from time to time. If you notice a large number of broken fasteners, however, you may need to replace the entire gutter system.
